The Neelin Spartans are ranked as the top high school girls’ volleyball team in Manitoba and for one weekend, they were the top team in British Columbia as well.
The defending Manitoba AAAA varsity girls’ champions swept through the playoff round at the 48-team UBC high school invitational tournament in Vancouver on Saturday. Neelin beat Victoria’s Lambrick Park Lions 2-0 (25-16, 25-20) in the final.
Alison Quiring and Tori Studler had seven kills apiece for Neelin and were named all-stars, while teammate Amy Gordon was the tournament’s most valuable player.
“I mean obviously to go out and beat the best teams in B.C. is a good accomplishment,” Neelin head coach Kevin Neufeld said. “I think the balance on our team allowed us to really be pretty dominant here this weekend.”
Earlier, the Spartans topped Campbell River’s Timberline Wolves 2-0 (25-17, 25-18) in the semifinals and Surrey’s Earl Marriott Mariners 2-0 (25-22, 25-17) in a quarter-final.
