The Neelin Spartans varsity girls’ volleyball team showed off its depth as it won the Royal Rumble tournament in Selkirk.
The Spartans knocked off the Westwood Warriors 2-1 (25-17, 24-26, 15-12) in the final, but did so with a roster mainly of players in Grade 11 in the second set. They also moved Jordan Hardy to setter during the second set and for the rest of the match after Amy Gordon twisted her ankle. Backup setter Jael Unger is out with an injury.
Alison Quiring, the tournament’s MVP, had 11 kills in the final, while Tori Studler added five. Jamie Campbell and Paige Thomson were named tournament all-stars. Neelin went undefeated at the event and didn’t drop a set until the final.
Meanwhile, the Crocus Plainsmen finished second in the B-side playoff. They fell 2-0 (25-13, 25-14) to the West Kildonan Wolverines in their final. Crocus beat the River East Kodiaks 2-0 (25-17, 25-23) in the B semifinals.
