The Neelin Spartans booked their ticket to the provincial AAA varsity boys’ high school basketball championship on Tuesday.
The Spartans defeated the visiting Dauphin Clippers 80-47 in an interzone provincial playoff game last night at the Neelin gymnasium behind 25 points and 10 rebounds from Theo Farough, and 20 points and 11 rebounds from Brock Hiltner.
Spartans head coach Don Thomson said defence was the key to the win and will be crucial in the upcoming provincials.
"We held them to eight points in the second (quarter) and seven in the third quarter, which is a credit to our hard work on ‘D’," Thomson said. "And that is really going to be the key for us (at provincials)."
Quinton Hunter added 11 points for the Spartans, who swept the Vincent Massey Vikings in the recent city championship and are ranked second among AAA teams in the province. Neelin will travel to Winnipeg for the provincial AAA championship, slated for March 14-16.
Brant Bosiak replied with 22 points, while Darren Gudmundsen added 13 for the Clippers, who will apply for a wild-card to provincials.
