The Brandon-based Storm Spartans just missed the medals at the Canadian Open Volleyball Championships in Toronto on the weekend.
The Storm Spartans advanced to the Tier 1 girls bronze-medal game in the 119-team 16-and-under girls division before being eliminated 2-0 (30-28, 25-17) by the Eclipse East from Pickering, Ont.
The Spartans 15U girls team were competing in the 15-and-under Tier 2 girls division and fell 2-0 (25-7, 25-15) in the quarter-finals to the Griffons de L’Outaouals from Hull, Que.
The Brandon Volleyball Club advanced to the Tier 4 semifinals in the 15-and-under boys division before dropping a 2-0 (25-13, 25-21) decision to Newfoundland’s CMS Tigers, while Brandon’s 16U boys team was eliminated in the Tier 1 quarter-finals 2-0 (25-10, 25-15) by the Markham (Ont.) Stingers.
A number of other Westman-based club volleyball teams are currently competing in the second wave of competition that wraps up with playoff action today. The Westman Volleyball Club and Brandon-based Amrak teams are in the 17-and-under girls age group, while Storm and Amrak teams are playing in the 18-and-under girls division that also wraps up with medal-round play today, with Brandon also represented in the 18-and-under Tier 2 boys division by BVC.
