The Neelin Spartans have clinched a berth in the provincial AAA varsity girls high school basketball championships in Thompson from March 15-17.
The Spartans beat the Westgate Knights 60-44 in the AAA wildcard game on Wednesday night in MacGregor to earn their berth in the provincials.
Neelin’s varsity boys team, which was ranked eighth in the province last week, also applied for a wildcard, but was unsuccessful, with that eighth and final spot in provincials awarded to Nelson McIntyre of Winnipeg.
Meanwhile, at the AAA/AAAA JV girls basketball provincials on Thursday, Neelin fell to the Sisler Spartans 44-37. Paige Thomson had 19 points, while Courtney Matienzo added 11 for Neelin.
Sisler ran out of steam in the quarter-finals when they fell 58-41 to the second-seeded Virden Golden Bears, who earned a first-round bye. Virden will play the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes in a semifinal today.
In AAA/AAAA JV boys provincial action yesterday, Kildonan East dropped Brandon’s Vincent Massey Vikings 99-42. Leading scorers were not available. Massey was bumped to the B-side along with the Dauphin Clippers, who fell 104-44 to MBCI.
