Spartans start strong

The Neelin Spartans got off to a winning start at Brandon University’s inaugural New Year’s Basketball Classic tournament on Friday.

Paige Thomson put up 22 points for the Spartans as they topped the Souris Sabres 58-15 in the varsity girls’ side of the event. Sarah Palsen replied with five points to lead the Sabres.

The tournament will wrap up today. In Friday’s other games:

VARSITY GIRLS:

Massey 64 Boissevain 35

Zaina Bird’s 16 points led the Vikings to victory. Sydney Ransom had 14 points for the Broncos.

Crocus 46 St. Heights 44

Desirae Peiffer put up 17 points, including the game-winning shot with 18 seconds left, while Mia Flammand added 12 for the Plainsmen. Rayna Siwicki replied with 16 for the Huskies.

RD Parker 65 Crocus 41

Adrianna Proulx’s 19 points paced the Trojans. Peiffer led the Plainsmen with 15.

St. Heights 55 Souris 37

Jessie Robbins had 16 points for the Sabres. Hannah Oscer, Robelie Aaron and Rayna Siaick led a balanced Husky attack with eight points each.

Garden City 49 Massey 41

Jessica Larabie netted 18 points for the Zodiacs, while Scotia Stewner added 15. Tara VanCauwenberghe led the Vikings with eight points and Shelby Nohr added seven.

Jesse Swaenepoel paced the Sabres with 15 points, while Bryanna Sutlic had 10 for the Plainsmen.

Nataleigh Bittern led the Spartans with 22 points, while Denim Zong and Sutlic had four apiece for the Plainsmen.
