Spartans stifle Eagles

The Neelin Spartans showed their defensive prowess on Thursday as they advanced to the provincial AAA high school varsity boys’ basketball semifinals in Winnipeg with a 72-44 win over the St. John’s Ravenscourt Eagles.

Theo Farough had 22 points and 14 rebounds for Neelin, which held the Eagles to 17 first-half points. Brock Hiltner chipped in with 15 points and 15 rebounds, eight of which were off the offensive glass. Quinton Hunter added 15 points and Chance Miller had 13 for Neelin.

“I thought as a team we defended extremely well and it created the easy ones we were looking for and it went from there,” said Neelin head coach Don Thomson.

“We had great defensive efforts from Chance Miller. He took their best player and did a real good job on him. We’re happy with where we are, but now we have to get back to work tomorrow.”

The second-seeded Spartans will play the host St. James Jimmies in today’s semifinal. The two teams have not met this season.

Meanwhile, the Virden Golden Bears defeated St. James 63-48 in their AAA girls’ quarter-final in Winnipeg. Virden will play Thompson’s R.D. Parker Trojans in their semifinal today.

In other provincial basketball action, it was:

A GIRLS

At Treherne, the Glenboro Panthers and Treherne Tigers will square off today with the winner advancing to tomorrow’s final.

Glenboro reached the semifinals by defeating Gladstone’s William Morton Warriors 52-34. Treherne beat the St. Laurent Hawks 91-30 in their quarter-final.

The Hamiota Huskies will meet the Grandview Spartans in the other semifinal. Hamiota beat the Pinawa Panthers 63-18 in their quarter-final. Pinawa beat the Ste. Rose Celtics 53-27 in their first-round game to drop the Celtics to the consolation side.

A BOYS

At Glenboro, the host Panthers are the last Westman team left going for the title. Glenboro beat the Gilbert Plains Trojans 82-66 in their quarter-final and will meet the Rosenort Hawks in today’s semifinal. The Hamiota Huskies fell to the consolation side of the tournament with a 94-49 loss to the Ross L. Gray Raiders in their quarter-final. Hamiota defeated the Somerset Mountain Lions 59-56 in their preliminary round contest.

AA GIRLS

At The Pas, the top-seeded Boissevain Broncos topped the Morris Mavericks 69-31 to advance to today’s semifinal against the Carman Cougars. Carman defeated the Elton Sabres 57-47 in their preliminary-round game to drop Elton to the consolation side of the draw. The Steinbach Christian Flames upset the Souris Sabres 58-43 in their quarter-final. Results from Thursday’s quarter-finals between Russell’s Major Pratt Trojans and the Teulon Saints were not available from source.

AA BOYS

At The Pas, the Killarney Raiders beat the Minnedosa Chancellors 82-57 to reach today’s semifinals. Roblin’s Goose Lake Raiders fell to the consolation side of the event with a 67-38 loss to the Helen Betty Osborne Huskies.

The score from the Ste. Anne Lynx-Green Valley Pirates quarter-final was unavailable from the source.
