The Neelin Spartans showed why they are the No.2-ranked varsity girls’ team in the province on Tuesday night.
The Spartans swept the host Vincent Massey Vikings 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-22) to take the best-of-three final two straight games in the Brandon High School Volleyball League.
"We’ve played real well lately," said Spartans head coach Kevin Neufeld, whose team made the decision to move up to the AAAA level this season despite being only a AAA-sized school.
"I think we had won 19 of our last 20, kind of thing ... so we’ve gradually gotten better as the season has gone along."
Alison Quiring had eight kills, while Jordan Hardy added seven kills to lead Neelin, which now advances to the provincial high school championship that begins Nov. 16 in Winnipeg.
Kelsey Pettinger replied with six kills, while Tristan Neudorf had five for the Vikings. Massey started the season ranked No.1 in the province but are now ranked seventh and will likely be in the mix for a wildcard spot to provincials.
Meanwhile, in the varsity boys’ city final last night, the Vikings evened up the series 1-1 with the Spartans after battling back for a 3-2 victory (19-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-21, 15-11) last night.
Jared Friesen led the Massey attack with 20 kills, while Joel Rocan added 16. Theo Farough led Neelin with 18 kills.
The third and deciding match has been changed and will now be played tonight at Neelin at 7:30.
