The host Neelin Spartans captured the varsity boys basketball title in the Neelin Invitational Tournament on Saturday night.
Led by an MVP performance from Dylan Minshull and a game-high 19 points from Theo Farough, the Spartans defeated the Vincent Massey Vikings 71-39 in an all-Brandon high school boys final at Neelin. Quinton Hunter added 16 points for Neelin, while Jeremy Lucio replied with 16 points for the Vikings.
Farough, Lucio, Chance Miller, Vincent Massey’s Johnson Duku, Moosomin’s Austin Jones and St. John’s Ravenscourt’s Avery Naily made the tournament all-star team.
Meanwhile, Regina’s Campbell Tartans took the NIT varsity girls title, beating the Virden Golden Bears 66-41. Heidi Smith and Jade Smith both had 13 points for Virden
Jade Smith’s 24 points led Virden to a 76-51 win over the Hamiota Huskies in the semifinals. Logan Biccum added 20 points. Campbell knocked off Neelin 71-31 in the other semifinal. The Huskies went on to beat the Spartans 61-49 in the third-place game.
Kristine McKusker was named tournament MVP, while Campbell teammates Shannelle Handziuk and Tia Sojonky made the all-star team, along with Heidi Smith and Logan Biccum of Virden, Keegan Robinson of Hamiota and Hannah Patton of Neelin.
