The Neelin Spartans split their first two games at the Java Jam high school basketball tournament on Thursday, topping the Westwood Warriors after falling to the Virden Golden Bears.
In the varsity girls’ division, Paige Thomson put up 37 points to lead the Spartans in their 72-57 victory over Westwood. Nikki Majewski replied with 24 for the Warriors.
Thomson led Neelin with 22 points earlier in the day as the Spartans fell 71-62 to the Golden Bears.
Natalie Vachon led Virden with 20.
The event continues today at the Crocus, Neelin and Vincent Massey gymnasiums.

Tristen Ogonoski’s 23 points paced the Lancers. Shanelle Haliuk had 11 points for the Plainsmen.
St. Mary’s 63 Kild. East 56
Nicole Daley and Melissa Indome both netted 15 points for the Flames.
Aida Hanusic led the Reivers with 16.
Crocus 45 Swan Valley 37
Paige Donald’s 18 points led the Plainsmen over the Tigers.
Swan Valley was led by Jillian Maga’s 12 points.
Virden 64 Massey 42
Carmen Ross posted 16 points to lead the Golden Bears to the victory.
Shayla Heinrichs replied with 11 for the Vikings.
Kildonan East 82 Neelin 13
Aimee Garland’s 17 points paced the Reivers.
Emma Church had seven points to pace the Spartans.
Selkirk 56 Grandview 32
Danielle Hallson led the Royals with 11 points.
Kendra Topham replied with 11 for the Spartans.
