The Crocus Plainsmen offence showed just how dominant it can be in its Winnipeg High School Football League game on Thursday.
The Plainsmen put up more than 500 yards of offence as they slipped by the visiting West Kildonan Wolverines 38-35. Victor St. Pierre led the charge with 17 rushes for 285 yards and three touchdowns, which impressed his head coach.
“He was a beast,” Kevin Boyd said. “He was in beast mode. The kid’s working hard and gained 25 pounds of muscle in the winter and it paid off.”
St. Pierre used the team’s situation in the standings as his motivation for the game.
The Plainsmen came in sporting an 0-3 record in the Kas Vidruk Division and St. Pierre had yet to win a football game in the WHSFL. He played junior varsity last season on a Crocus team that went winless.
The Plainsmen’s star running back not only wanted to experience his first win in the league, but also keep his team’s playoff hopes alive, and that’s exactly what he did.
“I was just thinking about the team and how much we needed this win, how much we wanted it if we wanted playoffs” said St. Pierre, who rushed for more yards on Thursday than he did during the first three games of the season. “I really put all my heart in all my runs and just let it flow.”
Cody Robinson added 15 rushes for 106 yards and a touchdown for Crocus. Ryan Baker was 9-for-16 in the air for 119 yards and a touchdown. He connected with Taylor Maloney eight times for 111 yards and the major. Maloney also kicked five converts and a 28-yard field goal.
Steven Siebrecht led the defence with 15 tackles. Spencer Harries added 10 tackles and Levi Black supplied six tackles and one interception.
While Crocus was happy with the win, Boyd admitted his players have to become a lot more disciplined. Both teams took a lot of unnecessary roughness penalties which caused some drives to stall or gave their opponents a shorter field to work with.
That also caused the game to last nearly three hours. While Boyd knows that’s something that needs to change before next week, he did leave the game with a sense of pride.
“They’ll do some running, all the guys who got the nasty penalties,” he said. “A lot of them were some intensity penalties. I hate to say it, but it was nice to see them have some heart and desire. We’ll take some of them but we have to clean it up for next game.”
