Strong start for Brandon

The Brandon Blues are a perfect 2-0 through the first day of action in the provincial Bantam A baseball championship at Simplot Millennium Park.

Brandon blew out Swan Lake/Somerset 12-2 and La Broquerie 20-4 on Friday to get off to a perfect start.

Brandon head coach Ed Penner was impressed with his team’s efforts Friday.

“I think we’re doing about as good as we could do,” he said. “We have lots of pitching left and we’re doing fine. The boys have really been hitting well, right through the lineup. We have 10 players and they’re all playing well.”

Jackson Popple picked up the win, while Jordy Stallard had three hits against Swan Lake/Somerset. Stallard threw three shutout innings in which he struck out two to pick up the win over La Broquerie.

Brandon wraps up preliminary-round play today versus Binscarth and Altona.

In other Bantam A action:

• Binscarth dropped its Pool 1 opener 6-3 to Altona, but bounced back to beat Swan Lake/Somerset 17-1, with Joben Smith earning the win on the mound.

• Lane Ganske earned the win for Virden in a 7-2 victory over Ste. Rose. Ste. Rose went on to fall 12-2 to Kenora, while Virden dropped a 16-6 decision to Winkler.

MOSQUITO A:

The first day of the provincial Mosquito A baseball championship didn’t end the way the Brandon Marlins hoped for, but they still feel confident looking forward.

Logan Calder scored three runs as Brandon held an 8-5 lead going into the sixth inning of its second game of the day, but the Marlins gave up three runs to Portage and went to an extra inning in which they gave up 10 runs to fall 18-8.

It was a tough loss for Brandon, but head coach Craig Anderson feels his team will bounce back today.

“I think we have to take it as a bit of a learning experience for these kids,” he said. “This is an 01-02 age group and nine of our 11 kids (were born in 2002). They’re still doing lots of learning and love the game of baseball. We can take some positives from this and see how high we can go.”

Brandon won its opener 14-10 over Gladstone as Carter Loewen reached base in all four of his at-bats and scored once.

Brandon (1-1) is likely in a must-win situation this morning when it plays Grandview (0-2) in its final preliminary-round game.

Loewen, who was the starting pitcher against Portage, believes his team can come out on top.

“(We need to) just try a little harder than the last game,” he said.

In other Mosquito A action:

• Elkhorn is 2-0 after beating Pembina Hills 11-8 and Vassar/Mitchell 18-15. Jayce Soder earned the win in the opener and Brady Frattinger in the second game.

• The Brandon Blue Jays were doubled 22-11 by Woodlands. Matt Warnica had three hits for Brandon, which went on to fall 15-0 to Winkler.

• Gladstone beat Grandview 11-5 as Boyd Smith homered and Brett Zuke got the win.
