Strong start for Cougars

Brittany Phillips and the Assiniboine Community College Cougars got off to a solid start at the Western Shield Senior B female hockey championship on Friday in Red Deer, Alta.

Phillips tallied six goals and an assist as the Cougars posted a 1-0-1 mark to open their round robin. Phillips scored both markers in ACC’s first game, which ended in a 2-2 tie against Grande Prairie (Alta.) Panthers (1-1-1).

Phillips wasn’t done there as she added four goals times and set up another as ACC pounded the winless Edmonton Renegades 9-1 in the evening. Kira Nyhuis, Kristin Nickel, Laura Williams, Whitney Anderson and Shayna Fluker also scored for ACC. Edmonton fell to 0-3-0.

The Cougars, who have secured a playoff spot, will wrap up the round robin today with games against the South Fraser (B.C.) TNT (1-1-0) and the Kamloops Vibe (2-0-0).
