Super start for defending champion

Terry McNamee made quick work of Tina Kozak in the Brandon Sun Westman Super League of Curling season opener on Wednesday night.

McNamee’s defending league champion team from Brandon scored three in the first, four in the third and five in the fifth in a 12-4 six-end victory at the Brandon Curling Club. Kozak, from Neepawa, made her debut in the league with a deuce in the second and singles in the fourth and sixth ends.

In Wednesday night’s other games, it was: Brian Fowler 8, Kelly Skinner 3; Jim Renwick 5, Rob Van Kommer 4; Duane Lang 8, Kelly Marnoch 5; Jerry Chudley 4, Perry Fisher 3; and Curtis McCannell 7, Mark Anderson 5.

Fowler 8 Skinner 3

In the battle of Brandon-based teams, Fowler’s squad grabbed an early lead by scoring three in the second end and put Skinner away with a four in the sixth before the two sides shook hands.

Renwick 5 Van Kommer 4

Brandon’s Jim Renwick used the hammer to his advantage by blanking seventh and scoring one in the eighth to edge Van Kommer. The game turned in the fifth when Renwick scored a three to go up by two on Van Kommer’s Carberry foursome.

Lang 8 Marnoch 5

Duane Lang stole three in the eighth end to win his debut in the Super League as a skip. Lang, who curls out of the Riverview Curling Club, never led Marnoch’s Carberry squad until the final rock came to rest, and never trailed by more than one after the second end.

Chudley 4 Fisher 3

Chudley’s Neepawa foursome stole one in the fifth end and used the hammer to post a single in the eighth to slip past Wawanesa’s Fisher. Fisher scored the game’s only deuce in the seventh end.

McCannell 7 Anderson 5

Pilot Mound’s McCannell stormed back from a 4-0 deficit after three ends by scoring three in the fourth and stealing singles in the fifth and sixth. After giving up one in the seventh, McCannell scored a deuce in the eighth to beat Anderson’s team from the Riverview Club.
