Switzer sparks Brandon midgets to sweep

Brandon Switzer scored a hat trick to lead the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 6-3 win over the NorMan Northstars in Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League action on Saturday night in Thompson.

Duncan Campbell, Tyler Coulter and Jordy Stallard also scored for Brandon (2-0-0) and Brett Kitt added a pair of assists as the Wheat Kings completed the weekend sweep. Tyler Gutenberg made 24 saves in the Brandon net.

Brendan Baron, Tyrel Charlton and Evan Akkerman replied for NorMan (0-2-0).

In Saturday’s other games, it was: Southwest Cougars 6, Interlake Lightning 3; Yellowhead Chiefs 3, Central Plains Capitals 1. In Sunday’s game, it was Yellowhead 5, Interlake 2.

Chiefs 5 Lightning 2

On Sunday in Neepawa, Taylor Sanheim scored twice while Tanner Kyle had a goal and two assists to help Yellowhead improve to 3-0-0 on the season. Brett Orr and Nolan Speiss also scored for the Chiefs, while Ashton Anderson had two assists and Matthew Short stopped 19 shots to earn the win.

Cougars 6 Lightning 3

On Saturday night in Souris, Sheldon Kowalchuk scored twice and Brandon Masson had one goal and two assists to lead the Cougars (1-0-1) to their first win of the season. Brady Chyzyk, Tanner Lewis and Daylon Creasy also scored, while Meyer Nell had two helpers and Tyson Verhelst made 32 saves for Southwest. Eli Batt, Shane Sigvaldason and Clayton Tait replied for the Lightning.

Chiefs 3 Capitals 1

On Saturday night in Portage, Brock Paddock scored twice and Bradley Bowles added an empty-netter to lead Yellowhead. Taylor Sanheim added a pair of assists for the Chiefs, while Brett Friesen stopped 29 shots to earn the victory.
