Team West loses first two at U17 Challenge

Team West got off to a rough start at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Drummondville, Que., dropping their first two games in the competition.

On Sunday, the squad comprised of players from Manitoba and Saskatchewan capitalized on one of their 13 power-play opportunities as they fell 6-2 to Russia (1-1). Ty Edmonds of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Virden Oil Capitals made 24 saves in West’s net. Jayce Hawryluk, a forward with the Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings, took a head-butting penalty and a 10-minute misconduct in the first period.

On Saturday, Team West (0-2) opened the tournament with a 4-0 loss to Sweden. Edmonds made 36 saves in the defeat.

Hawryluk served two minor penalties, while Wheat Kings prospect Ryley Lindgren and Jordan Thomson of Wawanesa each took one minor penalty for West, which was short-handed eight times, giving up three power-play goals.

Team West, which features Elkhorn’s Travis Sanheim, Wheat Kings assistant coach David Anning and Brandonite Jody Norminton as its equipment manager, continues preliminary round play this evening against Finland (0-1).

Meanwhile, Wheat Kings forward John Quenneville was held off the scoresheet in Team Pacific’s wild 8-7 overtime victory over Russia in their tournament opener on Saturday night.

Team Pacific, which includes Wheat Kings prospect Jordan Papirny as one of its goalies, had Sunday off but it is back on the ice this afternoon to take on Sweden (2-0).
