Third recruit for Bobcats

The Brandon University Bobcats women’s volleyball team added its third recruit in less than a week on Wednesday as 6-foot-2 middle Sara Barker from Winnipeg’s Dakota Collegiate signed her letter of intent to join the Bobcats.

Like left side Nikki Majewski from Winnipeg and Neelin libero Jamie Campbell, who were BU head coach Lee Carter’s previous two recruits, Barker is a Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association graduating all-star.

With fifth-year middle Lexi Loewen set to graduate at the end of this season, Carter knew he needed to get at least one new middle to back up Brandonites Meaghan Robertson and Jodie Baker, and Barker fits the profile well. She is athletic, a solid blocker and reminds Carter of Baker, who’s in her second season at BU.

“I would say blocking would be her top skill,” Carter said of his newest recruit. “A physical kid that moves quick laterally and gets her hands on to a lot of shots.”

Barker, who plans to study education, helped the Dakota Lancers make it to the quarter-finals at the provincial AAAA volleyball championship this season and played on Manitoba’s 17-and-under National Team Challenge Cup squad during the summer. Manitoba finished fourth at the NTCC.

Although he’s not done recruiting, Carter is happy to get three solid players committed to his team so quickly.

“We’re really excited about this group,” he said. “We’re really happy that Sara has decided to be part of our program.”
