Don Thomson is returning to the Basketball Manitoba coaching scene.

The Neelin High School teacher and varsity boys basketball coach has been named the head coach of Manitoba’s 17-and-under girls’ basketball team for the 2012-13 season.

The 17U team will compete in the Canada Basketball National Championship from Aug. 5-12 in Fredericton, N.B. Tryouts will be held at the University of Winnipeg from April 6-8.

Thomson is a four-time recipient of the Manitoba Basketball Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year award and a former basketball player for the Brandon University Bobcats, who went on to coach the BU women’s hoops team for eight seasons.

Thomson also coached provincials teams at the midget, juvenile and junior levels before taking a provincial men’s team to the 2001 Canada Games.

Coleen Dufresne, who coached the University of Manitoba Bisons for 17 seasons, will serve as Thomson’s assistant coach.
