Paige Thomson had eight kills and five aces to lead the Neelin Spartans to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-8, 25-15) sweep of the visiting Vincent Massey Vikings in Match 1 of the varsity girls’ city high school volleyball championship on Thursday.
Alison Quiring also had eight kills and picked up two aces for the Spartans, who are ranked second in the province, while Kristine Ward chipped in with seven kills.
Jill Giesbrecht had five kills for seventh-ranked Vincent Massey. Riese MacArthur added four kills for the Vikings, who host the second match of the best-of-three series on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Neelin is also up 1-0 in the varsity boys’ final after a 3-1 (25-15, 25-22, 15-25, 25-21) victory over Vincent Massey.
Theo Farough had 24 kills for the host Spartans, while Osian Edwards added 17.
Seth Friesen led the way for the Vikings with 13 kills, followed by Joel Rocan with 12 and Jared Friesen with 11.
The second match is set for Tuesday at 8 p.m., at Massey.
