Many of the top teams in the province will be in Brandon this weekend to open the season in the annual Top 8 Debate varsity girls’ high school volleyball tournament.
The defending provincial AAAA champion Neelin Spartans will be joined by Brandon’s Vincent Massey Vikings and the host Crocus Plainsmen — provincial champions in 2008 and 2009 — in a 10-team tournament that is slated for Friday and Saturday at the Crocus Plains gymnasium.
Also taking to the court will be the 2011 provincial champion St. Mary’s Flames, the 2010 champion River East Kodiaks, as well as the Selkirk Royals, who won four straight titles from 2004-07.
The Westwood Warriors, Miles Macdonell Buckeyes and the Weyburn Eagles, one of the better programs out of Saskatchewan, round out this year’s field.
The tournament tips off Friday at 2 p.m., as Crocus and Massey hit the court, with Neelin’s first match set for 3 p.m. Saturday’s playoff round wraps up with the tournament final at 5 p.m.
