Top-four finish for 15U Cats

The Carberry-based Cats Gold girls’ team earned a top-four finish at the 15U Canadian West club volleyball championships in Regina on Monday.

Cats Gold dropped a 2-0 decision (25-9, 25-7) to Defensa of Burlington, Ont., in the Division 1, Tier 1 bronze-medal match. Cats Gold fell 2-0 (25-18, 25-15) to LVC Fire of London, Ont., in the Tier 1 semifinals after knocking off Winnipeg’s junior Bison Gold 2-1 (25-18, 20-25, 15-8) in the quarter-finals to make the final four. Defensa defeated Dauphin’s Parkland Vipers 2-1 (25-21, 20-25, 15-10) in the quarter-finals.

Carberry’s Cats Blue were eliminated in the Division 3 girls’ Tier 1 quarter-finals when they lost 2-1 (16-25, 25-12, 15-5) to Edmonton’s Fog Fury, while the Cats Gold 14U team was defeated 2-1 (15-25, 25-21, 17-15) by Regina’s QCVC Royal 14U team in the Division 3 girls’ Tier 3 semifinals after beating the Element Panthers 14U of Moose Jaw, Sask., 2-1 (25-23, 20-25, 15-5) in the quarter-finals.

In other action, Westman dropped a 2-1 decision (16-25, 25-17, 15-5) to Calgary’s Canuck Fierce in the Division 2 girls’ Tier 3 semifinals after Westman beat GP Velocity of Grande Prairie, Alta., 2-0 (25-21, 25-12) in the quarter-finals.

Virden’s Club West Rage lost 2-0 (25-17, 25-17) to Nooks of Sturgeon County, Alta., in the Division 3 girls’ Tier 1 gold-medal match after beating the Fort McMurray (Alta.) Thunder 2-0 (25-13, 25-19) in the semifinals and the Winnipeg Fury 2-1 (21-25, 25-17, 15-11) in the quarter-finals.

In 15U boys’ action, the Brandon Volleyball Club Golden Bears fell in the Tier 4 semifinals 2-0 (25-16, 25-16) to the Steinbach’s Junior Sabres after beating Regina’s RVC Green 2-0 (25-11, 25-19) in the quarter-finals. The other BVC team lost 2-1 (25-19, 22-25, 15-9) to Steinbach’s Junior Pilots in the Tier 3 quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, at the Western Canadian 16U championships in Calgary on Monday:

• The Killarney-based 16U Cats Gold team settled for silver after advancing to the Division 1 girls’ second-tier gold-medal match before falling to the Markham (Ont.) Stingers 2-0 (25-20, 25-13). Cats Gold beat Oxford Crush of Woodstock, Ont., 2-1 (25-23, 14-25, 15-11) in Monday’s semifinals and knocked off Winkler’s Aztecs 2-0 (25-20, 25-11) in the quarter-finals.

• The Carberry-based 16U Cats Blue team won the Tier 4 girls’ title, defeating the PGYVC Kodiaks Red team from Prince George, B.C., 26-24, 25-22 in that final. The Cats beat Regina’s Junior Cougars 2-1 (25-22, 20-25, 16-14) in the semifinals and the KVC The Pack White from Kamloops, B.C., 2-0 (25-20, 25-21) in the quarter-finals.

• Brandon’s 16U Cats White squad dropped a 2-0 decision to Wham of Cranford, Alta., in the Division 3 girls’ Tier 2 quarter-finals in Calgary. Meanwhile, in the 16U boys’ Division 1, the Brandon Volleyball Club fell 2-1 to Vancouver’s Apex Paranoia in the Tier 3 quarter-finals.
