Stephanie Hunter has some difficult decisions to make.
Like a lot of talented multi-sport high school athletes, the 17-year-old Crocus Plains student is trying to figure out what sport she wants to play at the collegiate or university level next season. The Plainsmen basketball and volleyball player is also weighing the pros and cons of attending different schools, but one of her real debates is what to do academically.
The 6-foot-1 Hunter, who is a forward on the basketball court and a middle in volleyball, is thinking about becoming an ultrasound technician or study nuclear medicine, which is a two-year program offered at colleges. However, she’s not sold on that career and is still thinking about pursuing a university degree and playing in the CIS.
"It makes it a lot more difficult," she said. "Right now, as much as I love sports it’s not something I’ll be doing for the rest of my life. Education is going to get me the career I want to do for the rest of my life."
Hunter has proven herself to be a strong middle with the Plainsmen during the high school volleyball season and she’s currently playing with the 18-and-under Westman Volleyball Club. She’s also the top player on the Crocus varsity girls basketball team, averaging a double-double this season in points and rebounds and posted a triple-double with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 11 blocked shots in the opening game of the best-of-three Brandon High School Basketball League championship series, which continues today at Neelin at 6 p.m.
She’s passionate about both sports and is still debating which one to play next year.
"I love both," Hunter said. "I think I could go places either way. They’re both different, but I love them all the same."
Hunter already has scholarship offers from a couple of post-secondary institutions, but before she can accept any of them, she must first decide what sport and what academic program she wants to enter. She hopes to figure that out in the next month, but there will be a massive inner debate until she finally makes up her mind.
"I’m hoping to find that one that strikes me as hitting home," she said. "I’m just looking for that one that stands out for me and I’m hoping it comes along soon."
