It was a difficult day for the five southwestern Manitoba teams at the Canola Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Brandon Curling Club on Friday.
Four of the five local teams fell out of playoff contention, leaving Carberry’s Braden Calvert as the region’s last hope to reach Sunday’s tiebreakers.
Calvert, however, isn’t in good shape as he has a 1-3 record in the Red Group and needs to win each of his last three games and get a lot of help — having either Winnipeg’s Matt Dunstone or Pembina’s Daniel Birchard lose their final three games while also catching up to two other teams also ahead of him in the standings — to reach the tiebreakers.
Calvert dropped both of his games on Friday, losing 6-2 to Dunstone, the bonspiel’s second seed. In his first game of the day, Calvert missed two open draws for a deuce and was heavy with a guard that would have secured a steal as he fell 8-3 to Birchard.
The Carberry skip earned his first win of the bonspiel late Thursday night with an 8-4 victory Winnipeg’s Colin Kurz. Calvert stole four points in the final three ends.
Meanwhile, Austin Mustard, who’s from Carberry but skips a team based out of Portage la Prairie, fell to 0-4 and out of playoff contention in the Black Group. His team lost 6-3 to Nathaniel Swanson and 10-2 to Tanner Lott on Friday.
Winnipeg’s Kyle Doering, Tanner Lott and Cole Peters all lead the Black Group at 4-0. Birchard and Dunstone are also undefeated and sit atop the Red Group at 4-0.
In the provincial women’s championship, Minnedosa’s Jennifer Curle won her first game of the competition Friday afternoon, but was also eliminated from the playoff race.
Curle (1-3) scored three in the first end and hung on for a 7-6 victory over Winnipeg’s Christine MacKay in the afternoon draw, but she dropped a 6-5 decision to Rachel Burtnyk earlier in the day.
Brandon’s Janelle Schwindt remains winless at the event. She fell 7-4 to Kristi Watling last night and 9-8 to Stonewall’s Rebecca Lamb in the afternoon. She dropped an 8-2 decision to Shannon Birchard late Thursday night.
Dauphin’s Kylin Alm is also 0-4 and out of playoff contention. She lost 8-2 to Alyssa Vandepoele on Friday evening and 10-7 to Birchard in the afternoon. Alm fell 8-2 to Kristy Watling late Thursday night.
Burtnyk, Selena Kaatz and Beth Peterson all lead the Black Group at 4-0, while Birchard, Vandepoele and Watling are all 4-0 to top the Red Group.
The round robin continues today and Sunday morning with the playoffs set for Sunday evening and Monday.
Both the men’s and women’s championship finals are scheduled for Monday at 1:30 p.m.
EXTRA ENDS: The flu bug has been making its rounds at provincials, leading to locals in the spare pool getting some ice time. Brandon’s Tyler Blondeau filled in for Swanson’s team, which was without its skipper Friday morning. Carberry’s Max Van Kommer also joined Jordan Smith’s team from East St. Paul on Friday.
