A pair of Brandonites will play overseas this season.
Former Brandon Midget AAA Wheat Kings standouts Brett Skinner and Brock Trotter have both signed contracts to play in Europe, Skinner with the Chomutov Pirates in the Czech Republic Extraliga and Trotter with the Medvescak Zagreb Bears in the KHL.
Skinner, a 31-year-old defenceman who was a third-round draft pick of the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks in 2002, had one goal and 13 points in 48 AHL games last season.
Trotter, a 27-year-old centre, will play for Croatia’s top team in its second season in the KHL after sitting out the past two seasons while recovering from injuries. Trotter, a free-agent signing of the Montreal Canadiens in 2008, last played in 2011-12 in the AHL, scoring 14 goals and notching 38 points in 42 games.
Trotter had two points in six pre-season games with the Bears in a one-month tryout in August before signing a contract for the rest of the season.
"Some might think we took a risk bringing him, but he impressed us as a very nice surprise during the pre-season and showed himself as a dynamic forward," Medvescak sports director Aaron Fox stated on the Bears’ official website. "In the pre-season he was the leading shooter and we are happy that he will remain with us further."
