Shawn Taylor almost pulled off an early-season upset in the Brandon Sun Westman Super League of Curling on Wednesday night, but in the end he couldn’t prevent Brian Fowler from winning the battle of Brandon.
Taylor (0-3) stormed back from four down after the fifth end at the Brandon Curling Club to tie the game heading into the eighth.
Fowler (3-0) thwarted the comeback, however, using the hammer to his advantage to score one and earn a 6-5 victory. The win allowed Fowler to remain on top of the league’s standings.
In Wednesday’s other games, it was: Jerry Chudley 7, Perry Fisher 4; Terry McNamee 7, Curtis McCannell 4; Kelly Marnoch 7, Kelly Skinner 5; Duane Lang 4, Jim Renwick 3; and Cale Dunbar 8, Mark Anderson 2.
Chudley 7 Fisher 4
Neepawa’s Chudley (2-1) exploded for four points in the seventh end. Wawanesa’s Fisher (1-1) couldn’t respond in the eighth as he fell from the unbeaten ranks.
McNamee 7 McCannell 4
Brandon’s McNamee (2-1) rebounded from giving up a pair of steals and trailing 4-2 after four ends to steal four points of his own and top Pilot Mound’s McCannell (1-2).
Marnoch 7 Skinner 5
Carberry’s Marnoch (2-1) took control of the game with a three in the fifth end and stole two more points before running Brandon’s Skinner (0-3) out of stones in the eighth end.
Lang 4 Renwick 3
Renwick (1-2), who’s from Brandon, was seven feet too heavy with his final rock of the eighth end, which meant Brandon’s Duane Lang (2-1) didn’t need to throw his last one.
Neither team managed more than a single point in any end.
Dunbar 8 Anderson 2
Dunbar (2-0) scored three in the second and stole two in the third to remain unbeaten on the year with a victory over fellow Brandonite Anderson (1-2).
