Undefeated Irwin rolls into Dominion playoff round

Steve Irwin and his Brandon Curling Club team are perfect through the round robin at the Dominion Curling Club Championship at Scarborough, Ont.

Irwin (6-0) and his team of Justin Rabe, Travis Brooks and Cody Rabe, scored a single point in the eighth end to defeat Alberta’s Dan Sherrard 7-6 Thursday afternoon. Alberta dropped to 5-1 but secured the other playoff spot in the Grey Pool.

Manitoba will play in a semifinal tonight. Its opponent will be decided earlier in the day through tiebreakers.

The Dominion championship is a national event that is geared towards club-level curlers, with teams allowed only one player who has competed in a men’s, women’s, senior or junior provincials in the past four years.

Brandon’s Terry McNamee had his best game of the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship Thursday morning at Montreal. Manitoba’s skip curled 89 per cent as McNamee’s foursome beat the Northwest Territories’ Nick Saturnino 8-6.

However, McNamee’s squad — made up of Gimli’s Kerri and Kyle Einarson as well as Brandon’s Stacey Fordyce — fell to 3-7 after Thursday as they dropped their final game of the day 8-6 to Quebec’s Mike Fournier. Fordyce led Manitoba, which wraps up the round robin today against Northern Ontario’s Mike Assad, by curling 86 per cent.
