Van Den Ham 31st at Cyclo-cross worlds

Brandonite Michael van den Ham finished 31st in his first crack at the Cyclo-cross World Championships in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday.

Competing in the men’s under-23 category, van den Ham told the Sun his goal was to stay on the lead lap and place in the top 30-35 and he did just that — finishing five minutes 17 seconds behind the winner. A student at King’s University College in Edmonton, he was first among the three Canadian entrants.

“Unbelievable,” van den Ham told canadiancyclist.com when asked about his first experience at worlds. “So many people shouting ‘Canada’, shouting ‘Mike’ around the outskirts (of the course), it really just pushed me to go that little bit harder.”

Riders from the Netherlands and Belgium claimed the top 10 spots in the championship.
