VanCauwenberghe leads Vikings in opener

Tara VanCauwenberghe had the hot hand on opening night, scoring a game-high 19 points to lead the Vincent Massey Vikings to a 57-31 victory over the Crocus Plainsmen in the Westman High School Basketball League varsity girls’ season opener on Tuesday night.

Desirae Peiffer replied with 11 points for the visiting Plainsmen.

Meanwhile, in last night’s varsity boys’ season opener, Johnson Duku scored 17 points to power the host Vikings to a 64-41 victory over the Plainsmen.

James Klassen added 12 points for Vincent Massey, while Kyle Johnston and Michael Olive replied with nine points apiece to lead Crocus Plains.

Tonight, the Westman junior varsity basketball season tips off with Vincent Massey at Crocus Plains in girls’ action at 6 o’clock, while the Vikings visit the Elton Sabres in the junior varsity boys’ game at 7:45.
