Vikes, Spartans, Bears off to hot start at NIT

The Vincent Massey Vikings varsity girls’ basketball team has advanced to the championship pool in the Neelin Invitational Tournament.

The Vikings won both of their games on Friday, topping the Hamiota Huskies 59-39 and the Springs Christian Eagles 77-16. Zaina Bird paced the Vikings with 13 points against the Huskies, while Shayna Mathison replied with 18 for Hamiota. Taylor Curtis had 11 for Massey in its second game, while Johanna Nicholson had nine for the Eagles.

Massey will face the Virden Golden Bears and Neelin Spartans in the championship group today to determine the tournament winner.

Elsewhere Friday in the NIT:

VARSITY GIRLS

Hamiota 51 Springs Christian 16

Mathison had 17 points for the Huskies (1-1). Details weren’t available for the Eagles (0-2).

Virden 93 Crocus Plains 40

Heidi Smith’s 24 points paced the Golden Bears (2-0), while Desirae Peiffer led the Plainsmen (1-1) with 10.

Virden 99 Dauphin 23

Smith posted 25 for the Golden Bears. Odelle Fiola-Johnson had nine for the Clippers (0-2).

Crocus 69 Dauphin 28

Shanelle Haliuk led the Plainsmen with 16 points. Details weren’t available for the Clippers.

Neelin 79 Windsor Park 40

Kristine Ward scored 32 points for the host Spartans (2-0), while Michaella Tanghe had 11 for the Royals (1-1).

Neelin 84 St. John’s Ravenscourt 36

Ward posted 22 points and Courtney Matienzo added 14 for the Spartans. Suman Memon and Hailey Carlson had nine apiece for the Eagles (0-2).

Windsor Park 48 SJR 30

Jaden McGill had 17 points for the Royals, with Carlson netting 13 for the Eagles.

VARSITY BOYS

Neelin 85 Edward Schreyer 38

Quinton Hunter’s 21 points paced the Spartans (2-0), who finished first in their pool. Phil Gut had 12 for the Barons (1-1).

Neelin will play the Vincent Massey Vikings and Weyburn (Sask.) Eagles in the championship pool today.

Neelin 85 Dauphin 34

Andrew Paul and Brock Hiltner both had 22 points for the Spartans. Details for the Clippers (0-2) weren’t available.

Edward Schreyer 75 Dauphin 68

Martin Gut had 20 points for the Barons, while Lee Kendrit had 21 for the Clippers.

Vincent Massey 69 Swan Valley 49

Igor Reva posted 13 points for the Vikings as they won the only game in their pool. Eric Klein replied with eight for the Tigers.

Weyburn 96 Crocus 40

Ben Rumple’s 24 points led the Eagles to a win in the only game in their pool. Justin Buhr led the Plainsmen with six points.
