Vikes start strong in Zone Challenge

All five Brandon teams opened the Triple Crown Zone Challenge round robin high school basketball tournament on a winning note on Friday.

The Vincent Massey Vikings varsity girls’ led things off by opening the tournament with a 65-45 win over the Portage Saints at Massey.

Tara VanCauwenberghe led the Vikings with 16 points. Katie Hannah replied with 18 for the Saints.

The tournament wraps up today at Massey and Neelin.

VARSITY GIRLS

Crocus 68 Northern Parkway 34

Michelle Kyle’s 26 points paced the Plainsmen, while Jaryn Olfert led Northern Parkway with nine.

Neelin 75 Steinbach 35

Paige Thomson posted a game-high 29 points for the Spartans, while Brooke Goodman had 12 for the Flames.

Garden Valley 71 Portage 51

Lanea Ginter had 26 points for the Zodiacs, while Katie Hannah had 18 for the Saints.

VARSITY BOYS

Massey 65 Garden Valley 50

Igor Reva netted 13 points to lead the Vikings to the win. Darius Martens had 16 for the Zodiacs.

Neelin 92 Moosomin 41

Brody Gill posted 14 points for the Spartans, while Joe Waters chipped in with 10. Jace Woods replied with 12 points for the Marquis.

Garden Valley 45 Steinbach Christain 43

Alex Giesbrecht’s 28 points led the Zodiacs. Theo Driedger posted 10 for the Flames.
