Vikings finish 6th, Plainsmen take 9th

The Vincent Massey Vikings came out on the wrong end of a defensive battle in their final game at the Brandon Sun Spartan Invitational varsity boys’ high school basketball tournament on Saturday.

Daven Pascal led the Vikings with 11 points as they fell 40-35 to the Steinbach Sabres in the Tri-Star Screen Printing Division’s fifth-place game. Massey got that far by beating the Glenboro Panthers 65-44 in the Tier 2 playoff semifinal. Jeremy Lucio scored 16 points for Massey, while Tyler Sjolander also had 16 for Glenboro, who went on to lose 58-53 to the Stonewall Rams in the seventh-place game. Matt Klassen led the Panthers with 12 points.

Meanwhile, the Crocus Plainsmen finished ninth in the Tri-Star Division after topping Thompson’s R.D. Parker Trojans 96-45 in the Tier 3 final. Jake Cullen led the Plainsmen with 27 points and they disposed of the Westgate Wings 73-64 in their semifinal.

In other Westman results, the Killarney Raiders lost both of their Tier 3 playoff games, falling 77-64 to the Westgate Tigers in the 11th place game and 62-58 in their semifinal against the Trojans. Logan Beazley led Killarney in both games, and scored 22 against Westgate.

The Minnedosa Chancellors finished 14th in the division after losing 84-78 to the Sanford Sabres in the Tier 4 final. Mark Morgan led the Chancellors with 29 points. Morgan scored 19 in Minnedosa’s 61-32 win over the Swan Valley Tigers in their semifinal.
