The Vincent Massey Vikings are No.1 in the province in the first AAAA varsity girls high school rankings of the season as 26 teams prepare to descend on the Wheat City this weekend for a pair of big pre-season tournaments.
The Vikings will be among 12 Westman teams taking part in the Westman girls volleyball tournament on Friday and Saturday at Crocus Plains High School. Vincent Massey won the Top 8 Debate — the first big tournament of the season — last Saturday night at Crocus to earn the top ranking.
“It’s nice for the girls to have some success on the first weekend,” said Vikings head coach Greg Beckwith. “We’ve talked about it as a team and we realize that really in the general scheme of things it doesn’t mean a whole lot. We have lots of work to do and we know that and the separation this year (in AAAA) between the 10th-place team and the first-place team is essentially two points, so it is the tightest that I have ever seen …
“It’s nice and it’s something to build on and everyone wants to be No.1 at the end of the year, right? So it’s something that we are going to strive to continue to be.”
The Vikings will be joined by the host Crocus Plainsmen and the Crocus JVs, along with the Benito Cobras, Deloraine Colts, Glenboro Panthers, Hamiota Huskies, Minnedosa Chancellors, Roblin, Shoal Lake Sharks, Virden Golden Bears and the Winnipegosis Lakers. The final is set for Saturday at Crocus at 6 p.m.
Meanwhile, the 14-team Brandon University Bobcats boys volleyball tournament will run Friday and Saturday at Neelin High School and Assiniboine Community College.
Brandon will be represented by the Neelin Spartans, the Plainsmen and the Vikings, who will be joined by the Elton Sabres, Glenboro, the Melita Marauders, Russell’s Major Pratt Trojans, Roblin’s Goose Lake Raiders, Souris Sabres, Strathclair Skyhawks and the Wawanesa Warriors. Also taking part are Fort Richmond from Winnipeg, and teams from Weyburn, Sask., and Carnduff, Sask., with the final slated for Saturday at Neelin at 6 p.m.
