Vikings, Spartans make quarter-finals

The Vincent Massey Vikings and Neelin Spartans were on the court late Friday night in a quarter-final match at the St. Vital varsity girls’ high school volleyball tournament in Winnipeg.

After going 1-2 in group play on Thursday, the Vikings bounced back to beat the Garden Valley Zodiacs 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 26-24) in the playoffs on Friday.

Tristan Neudorf had 10 kills, 15 digs and three aces for Massey, while Carmen Hutsal added eight kills, 10 digs and three aces. Kelsey Pettinger chipped in with six kills, five digs and two aces for the Vikings.

The result of their quarter-final with the Spartans was not available as of press time.

Meanwhile, the Crocus Plainsmen will play for ninth place. Crocus fell 3-2 (14-25, 26-24, 25-20, 19-25, 11-15) to the St. Mary’s Flame in their first-round playoff match to fall to the B-side of the draw before rebounding with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 25-19) win over the Dakota Lancers. Abbi Robinson had 46 digs on Friday and Casie McLaughlin added 31 kills. Stephanie Hunter had 17 kills and nine blocks in the two matches.

At the varsity boys tournament at Winnipeg, the Vikings posted a 1-1 record courtesy of a 2-0 (25-19, 25-19) win over Fort Richmond and a 2-0 (25-12, 25-16) loss to Miles Macdonell. Joel Rocan led the team with 16 kills.

The round robin and playoffs conclude today.
