Vikings, Spartans on the road for quarter-finals

The Vincent Massey Vikings felt they left a win on the East Side field during their Winnipeg High School Football League regular season finale last week, and they want to make amends tonight.

The Vikings tied the Kildonan East Reivers 8-8 last week and have a rematch with them on the same field in tonight’s Kas Vidruk Division quarter-final at 7:15. The only difference between the two games is that the Vikings will be classified as the home team after finishing in fourth place with a 4-2-1 record.

Vikings head coach Mike Steeves thinks it could be an advantage to play the Reivers (3-3-1) again because they have been in their heads for the last two weeks, but he knows his team can’t get too overconfident.

“It made things a lot easier for us,” he said. “We didn’t have to break down as much film. We kind of knew what to work for, but sometimes you feel like you’ve seen everything and they’ll have other tricks in their hat. They’ll have other schemes to come out with.

“It’s fun to have it because it’s so fresh in our minds that we knew that we left some things on the field and we’re happy to have the opportunity to redeem ourselves.”

Overconfidence is a concern for the Neelin Spartans in their Andy Currie Division quarter-final today with the Daniel McIntyre Maroons.

Neelin is coming off an impressive 6-1-0 campaign and will be playing on the artificial turf at Canad Inns Stadium today at 5:15 p.m. The Spartans haven’t played on turf this season.

The Spartans did pitch four shutouts on their own field, including one against the Maroons (3-4-0). Neelin head coach Robert Cullen knows his players can’t make it a foregone conclusion that it will happen again in today’s game.

“We beat them 40-0 earlier in the season and called the dogs off, but we’re not too confident because we know their running back has some good speed, and they have a very good, young quarterback who we never sacked at all during the game and he got a few passes off,” Cullen said. “We have to come out and play a very stellar defensive-minded game and be really strong on offence.”
