Vikings trounce Trojans

Jesse Smith returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and added four tackles and one sack on defence as the Vincent Massey Vikings shut out the host Portage Trojans 31-0 on Friday.

James Johnson rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries as the Vikings improved to 2-0 in the Winnipeg High School Football League’s Kas Vidruk Division. Matt Bryant had seven carries for 32 yards and Michael Bright added a 22-yard touchdown run and caught a 35-yard pass from Evan Didychuk.

Didychuk finished 4-for-8 for 42 yards in the air.

However, it was the defence that head coach Mike Steeves credited for Massey’s victory.

“It was a really great defensive effort,” he said. “They have a slippery back and he couldn’t go anywhere. We tackled well, had a great plan and they had a tough time moving the ball.”

Steven Gresl led Massey with 9.5 tackles and Ty Kuz added six more. Josh Hoppe had one tackle and one interception.
