The Virden Oil Capitals have added Brandonite Cody Nelson to the fold.
The Manitoba Junior Hockey League club acquired the 18-year-old forward from the Portage Terriers on Thursday in exchange for the list rights to former Western Hockey League defenceman Ryan Dech.
The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Nelson played 34 games for the league champion Terriers as a rookie last season, scoring three goals, while adding seven assists and 137 penalty minutes.
Dech, a 19-year-old Winnipegger, was recently released by the Edmonton Oil Kings after helping the club win the WHL title last season. Dech had three goals, 10 assists and 34 penalty minutes in 40 games with Edmonton.
The Oil Capitals, who relocated from Winnipeg during the off-season, play their first game in Virden tonight against the Dauphin Kings, while the Terriers visit the Waywayseecappo Wolverines.
In other MJHL games on opening night, the Neepawa Natives host the Steinbach Pistons, the Swan Valley Stampeders visit the OCN Blizzard and the Selkirk Steelers entertain the Winnipeg Blues.
