Jake Virtanen scored a pair of goals and Mathew Barzal added an insurance marker in the third period as Canada opened the world men’s under-18 hockey championship with a 3-1 win over Sweden on Thursday in Finland.
Mason McDonald made 24 saves for the Canadian crew, which includes Brandon Wheat Kings Ryan Pilon, Jayce Hawryluk and John Quenneville as well as Elkhorn’s Travis Sanheim. Quenneville won four of his eight faceoffs and had a shot on goal for Canada, while Sanheim also fired a shot on net. Hawryluk did not dress.
Canada continues its pool play today against Germany and Sunday against Slovakia.
