Westman golfers off to a solid start in amateur

Brandon’s Travis Fifi opened the provincial men’s amateur golf championship by shooting 74 on Monday in Steinbach.

Brandon’s Travis Fifi and Glenboro’s Josh Wytinck were tied for 13th place after the opening round of the provincial men’s amateur golf championship Monday at the Links at Quarry Oaks in Steinbach.

Fifi and Wytinck both shot 74 to sit seven strokes off the pace set by former champion Garth Collings of Breezy Bend, Todd Fanning of Niakwa and Burke Wiebe of Niakwa.

Dauphin’s Trevor Fox is tied for 11th after opening with a 72, Neepawa’s Joe Chartrand shot 78, while Dauphinite Connor Shaw carded a 79. Ross Sheard notched an 83 while fellow Brandonite Jeremy Marvin carded a 90, the same score as Glenboro’s Zach Wytinck.

Meanwhile, Brandon’s David Glenn, Dauphin’s Drew Tyschinski and Glenboro’s Glen Ford were still on the course when play was suspended last night and are scheduled to complete their first round early this morning.
