Skip Jennifer Curle of Minnedosa throws a rock during her rink’s match against Raina Syrnyk’s Gilbert Plains rink in the provincial junior women’s curling championship at the Brandon Curling Club on Sunday.
Carberry’s Braden Calvert did everything he could during his final three round-robin games to secure a playoff spot at the Canola rovincial Junior Men’s Curling Championship at the Brandon Curling club, but he couldn’t get the break he needed.
Calvert and his junior men’s team of Shayne MacGranachan, Cody Chatham and Jefferey Steen won their final three games to post a 4-3 record in the Red Group, but no team was able to bring Pembina’s Daniel Birchard or Winnipeg’s Matt Dunstone back to the pack to force tiebreakers. Those two teams finished with a 7-0 and 6-1 record, respectively, and advanced to the playoffs.
Although Calvert missed the playoffs, he believes provincials was a success for his squad, as they were the only Westman-based team to post a winning record.
"I think overall we are (happy)," said Calvert, who was battling the flu bug all week. "It was a little disappointing with games here and there, but for the most part I think we accomplished what we wanted to."
Meanwhile, Austin Mustard, who’s also from Carberry but skips a team out of Portage la Prairie, finished with a 2-5 record in his pool. He fell 7-4 to Winnipeg’s Randy Greig in his final game. Winnipeg Kyle Doering topped the group with a 6-1 record. Petersfield’s Tanner Lott finished second at 6-1.
Birchard has secured his spot in today’s final (1:30 p.m.) after beating Doering 7-2 in the men’s 1-vs.-1 Page playoff game Sunday night. Doering fell to the semifinal (9:30 a.m.), where he will play Dunstone, who defeated Lott 9-7 in the 2-vs.-2 Page game last night.
Minnedosa’s Jennifer Curle had the best record of all Westman-based squads at the junior women’s provincial championship, which is also being held at the Brandon Curling Club.
Curle won two of her final three games — including an 8-7 victory over Gilbert Plains’ Raina Syrnyk in the last draw — to finish with a 3-4 record in the Black Group. Winnipeg’s Beth Peterson and Selena Kaatz topped the group with 6-1 records.
In the Red Pool, Dauphin’s Kylin Alm defeated Miami’s Carly Angers 8-6 in her final game to finish with a 2-5 record. Brandon’s Janelle Schwindt went 1-6, with her lone victory coming over Alm Saturday morning.
Winnipeg’s Shannon Birchard (7-0) topped the Red Group and defeated Peterson 4-3 in the 1-vs.-1 Page playoff game Sunday night to advance to today’s final (1:30 p.m.).
Winnipeg’s Kristi Watling (6-1) fell 6-3 to Kaatz in the 2-vs.-2 Page playoff game. Kaatz and Peterson will play each other in today’s semifinal (9:30 a.m.), with the winner facing Birchard for a provincial title.
