Westman speedskaters shine

A pair of Westman Speed Skating Club members earned multiple medals at the Canadian Age Class Long Track Championships in Winnipeg on the weekend.

Brandon’s Raelene Sawatzky-Dyck placed second overall out of 18 competitors in the open women’s (15 to 29-year-olds) division after racing to silver medals in the 1,500 metres and 3,000m and a bronze medal in the 500m.

Meanwhile, Brandon’s Dylan Peyachew finished in second place out of 17 racers in the 13-year-old boys division, skating to silver medals in the 300m and 500m, a bronze in the 100m and a bronze in the relay.

In other Westman results, Kennedy Charles of Virden was fifth overall out of nine competitors in the 11-year-old girls division, while Carly Foster of Douglas placed 12th overall in the open women’s division.

A total of 150 skaters from eight provinces took part in the national event.
