Westman trio to begin U-18 women's worlds

Canada will begin pursuit of its second straight women’s under-18 world hockey title today in Vierumäki, Finland.

Neepawa defenceman Halli Krzyzaniak is an alternate captain for the Canadian team, which opens against Hungary this morning. Krzyzaniak and forward Ashleigh Brykaliuk of Brandon are both veterans of last year’s squad, which won Canada’s second gold medal in the five-year history of the event.

Forward Cassidy Carels of Bruxelles is in her first year with the national team, as is Eden Murray, a Medicine Hat, Alta., native whose parents are originally from Brandon.

Canada will also face Finland and Germany in the preliminary round, with the playoffs starting on Wednesday and the medal games set for one week from today.
