The Brandon Wheat Kings had another poor showing in Swift Current on Sunday night as they extended their Western Hockey League losing streak to four games.
Despite facing a team that was playing its third game in three nights, the Wheat Kings (21-37-3-2) failed to establish their style of play as they fell 6-1 to the Broncos (29-27-3-4). Brandon was outshot 42-23 in the game and head coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk was not happy with his team’s effort.
"(The Broncos) wanted to establish the type of game they wanted to play," he said. "We didn’t establish anything in the first period. We got out of it 1-0 and we didn’t get anything established or give ourselves a chance at all tonight."
Graham Black led the Broncos’ charge with two goals and one assist. Colby Cave netted two more goals for the Broncos while Levi Bews and Ryon Moser added singles. Eric Roy scored Brandon’s lone marker on a nice move between two defenders before beating Bronco goalie Eetu Laurikainen.
Corbin Boes, who started his first game for Brandon since Jan. 25 when he injured his knee, made 36 saves for Brandon.
This was Brandon’s seventh loss in eight games. Gylywoychuk knows it won’t be easy to get out of Brandon’s most recent slump, but he hopes they can when the Wheat Kings host the Broncos at Westman Place on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
"I think we have to see where the situation is and first and foremost we have to make sure we’re bringing accountability to each player," he said. "When each player does that, it will be accountability of the team and that’s the situation where we have to look each other in the eye and make sure we’re bringing our best to every game."
