Winless Manitoba drops defensive battle to N.B.

Manitoba’s under-18 men’s rugby team almost closed out the round-robin portion of the National Championship Festival with a victory on Thursday in Calgary.

The squad, which includes Brandon’s Bryce Colquhoun, Daniel Alvarenga and Conor Farran as well as Minnedosa’s Norman Sims and Logan Patterson and Souris’s Nathan Greig, dropped to 0-4 with an 8-5 loss to New Brunswick.

Manitoba will take on Saskatchewan (2-2) and Prince Edward Island (1-3) on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Manitoba’s women’s team — which includes Brandonites Brittany Boschman and Kelly Braun as well as Hailey Rapsky and Mallory Workman of Minnedosa, Charlotte West and Kendra Roberts of Souris and Mary Hughes of Dauphin — fell 51-0 to Ontario and

29-0 to Quebec on Thursday.

Manitoba (0-4) will face Saskatchewan and Alberta on Saturday.
