Scott Witherspoon’s three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie as the Carberry Royals beat the host Minnedosa Mavericks 6-5 on Tuesday in the first game of the Santa Clara Baseball League final.
Witherspoon finished the game 2-for-2 with a walk. Torey Scott went 3-for-4 and scored a run for the Royals, who will host Game 2 of the best-of-five series on Wednesday, Aug. 13.
Daylon Creasy pitched a complete-game six-hitter for the win, striking out four Mavericks and walking two. Losing pitcher Mike Tarleton allowed six runs in six innings with three walks and three strikeouts.
Devin Foord led Minnedosa at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
