Wolverines open season with win over Nomads

The Westman Wolverines got a five-yard touchdown run from James Johnson and a five-yard touchdown catch from Jared Spearing as they opened their Manitoba Major Football League season with a 17-7 win over the host North Winnipeg Nomads on Saturday evening.

Johnson finished the game with 112 rushing yards on 19 carries and 47 receiving yards, while Spearing hauled in six passes for 71 yards. Quarterback Seth Hume, who ran for a two-point convert, finished 17-for-36 passing for 192 yards with the scoring toss to Spearing and three interceptions. He also rushed for 23 yards.

Tanner Boak added a 31-yard field goal for the Wolverines, who trailed 7-0 after the first quarter before replying with 14 points in the second and Boak’s field goal in the fourth.

Defensive lineman Grant Maluga led Westman’s defence with three tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble, while safety Brendon Brydges picked off a pair of passes and forced a fumble. Linebacker Adam McClelland recovered a fumble and recorded 2 1/2 tackles.

The Wolverines return to Brandon for their home opener against the East Side Eagles on at Crocus Plains’ field on Saturday at 3 p.m.
