Virden’s Shayne Sebree scored a fourth-quarter touchdown and the ensuing two-point convert that put the Westman Wolverines up for good as they defeated the Fort Garry Lions 27-20 in the Westman Major Football League on Saturday in Winnipeg.
Sebree, whose winning run came from four yards out, finished the game with 89 yards on 19 carries. He also caught a pair of passes for 16 yards.
Brandon’s Chris Stantial added 31 yards and a touchdown on five rushes, while fellow Brandonite James Johnson ground out 22 yards on eight carries for the Wolverines (3-2), who scored 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to overcome a 20-17 halftime deficit and knock off the Lions (1-2).
Wolverines quarterback Seth Hume, who’s from Brandon, was 6 for 13 in the air for 58 yards, including connections with Moosomin’s Evan Reine for 18 yards and Brandon’s Reed Beaudry for 12. Hume also rushed for an 11-yard touchdown.
Souris’s Brendynn Tuttosi kicked two converts, made three tackles, had one tackle for a loss, two sacks, one forced fumble and he forced a safety touch.
Brandonite T.J. Simpson added six tackles, had one tackle for a loss and one knockdown, while Moosomin’s Cole Easton made 5 1/2 tackles.
Brendon Brydges, who’s from Portage la Prairie, and Brandon’s Jason Sinclair both had one interception.
Dauphin’s Bergan Justice added a rouge and Fort Garry conceded a safety to round out the scoring for Westman.
The Wolverines are idle this week and return to action on Sept. 28 when they visit the St. James Rods (1-3).
