Fresh off their first playoff appearance, the Westman Wolverines have also scored a couple of league awards for the first time in the team’s three-year history.
Jordan Hicks of Brandon has been selected as the winner of the Joe Donak Trophy as the top lineman in the Manitoba Major Football League this season, while Brendynn Tuttosi of Souris was named the co-winner of the Ben Langhans Memorial Trophy as the league’s most outstanding defensive player. Hicks and Tuttosi will officially be honoured at the league’s awards night on Nov. 15 in Winnipeg.
Meanwhile, the Wolverines have selected four team MVPs for the season, with Hicks and Tuttosi joined by safety Tain Heywood of Brandon and running back Shayne Sebree of Virden.
The Wolverines went 4-4 in the regular season to finish in fifth place in the eight-team league — geared to players aged 18 to 22 — and are coming off a 34-30 triumph over the host St. James Rods in Saturday’s quarter-final.
The Wolverines will now face the first-place East Side Eagles (8-0 in the regular season) in this Saturday’s semifinals in Winnipeg.
