Kolby Woods scored a pair of first-period goals and Kyler Beckett stopped 30 of the 31 shots he faced on Sunday night as the Virden Oil Capitals earned a 3-1 Manitoba Junior Hockey League victory over the Selkirk Steelers.
In Sunday’s other games, it was: Portage Terriers 5, Waywayseecappo Wolverines 3; Steinbach Pistons 4, OCN Blizzard 1; and Winnipeg Blues 3, Swan Valley Stampeders 1.
On Saturday, it was: Dauphin Kings 5, Neepawa Natives 2; Steelers 6, Oil Capitals 3; Blues 4, Wolverines 3; Winkler Flyers 5, Blizzard 2; and Pistons 2, Stampeders 1.
In Virden, Kevin Pochuk netted the other goal for Virden (12-8-0), with Melita’s Lucas Oliver, Souris’s Ben Williams and Brandon’s Cody Nelson picking up helpers. Brady Bouchard replied for Selkirk (11-4-2).
Terriers 5 Wolverines 3
At Portage la Prairie, Elkhorn’s Brad Bowles set up both of Zach Waldvogel’s goals for the Terriers (12-4-2), while Brett Orr, who’s also from Elkhorn, picked up an assist. J.J. Cruikshank scored twice for Wayway (6-12-1), and set up the team’s other goal.
Pistons 4 Blizzard 1
At Steinbach, Zach Rakochy made 41 saves, while Anthony Walsh, Tyler Penner and Hayden Goderis had a goal and an assist for the Pistons (14-2-0). Tyler Grove replied for OCN (8-10-1).
Blues 3 Stampeders 1
At Winnipeg, Warren Callis had a pair of goals, including an empty-netter, for the Blues (10-6-2). Brayden MacDonald replied for the Stampeders (8-12-0).
Kings 5 Natives 2
In Dauphin, Michael Sofillas had a goal and an assist, while Brandonite Mitch Van Teeling, Cameron Whyte of Virden and Jesse Bernard of Killarney also scored for the Kings (9-6-1). Tanner Butler of Souris and Taylor Sanheim of Elkhorn had two assists each for Dauphin. The Natives (4-10-3) lost their third straight game despite two Derrick Brooks goals. Brandonite Tyson Verhelst made 29 saves in the Neepawa net.
Steelers 6 Oil Capitals 3
In Selkirk, Dallas Starodub scored twice, while Shane Gingera had a goal and two assists for the Steelers. Oliver scored for the Oil Capitals, as did Jake Dudar and Artsiom Kalashnikov.
Blues 4 Wolverines 3
In Winnipeg, Jordan McCallum scored the winning goal with 3:46 to play and also had two assists for the Blues. Jared Sprink, Robert Briem and Aaron Dupasquier replied for the Wolverines.
Flyers 5 Blizzard 2
In Winkler, Travis Marit (two goals, one assist) and Scott Gail (one goal, two assists) both had three-point nights for the Flyers (5-11-2). Damien Kulynych had a goal and an assist for the Blizzard.
Pistons 2 Stampeders 1
In Steinbach, Matt Franczyk and Tyler Penner both scored, while Nicholas Deery made 34 saves for the Pistons. Carter Johnson scored for the Stampeders, who got 45 saves from Nathan Armstrong.
Kulynych was named the MJHL’s player of the month. Clay Van Diest of Portage was the defenceman of the month, while Selkirk’s Braeden Ostepchuk was the top goalie in October.
Riley Hillis of the Natives was named rookie of the month for scoring seven goals and posting nine points in October. Virden’s Dudar was a runner-up.
