Brandon Wheat Kings captain Mark Stone has been named the Western Hockey League’s most sportsmanlike player.

Stone was honoured at today’s WHL awards banquet in Calgary after firing 41 goals and racking up 123 points in 66 games, while accumulating only 22 penalty minutes in the 2011-12 campaign.

"I’ve become real comfortable in Brandon, I spent a great four years there and I owe (general manager) Kelly McCrimmon and the staff there a lot," Stone stated in a news release. "Being able to get comfortable with the same billets for four years was awesome for me."

The 19-year-old right-winger from Winnipeg, who led Canada in goals at the 2012 world junior hockey championship, also made his NHL debut this season with the Ottawa Senators, setting up a game-winning goal in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series versus the New York Rangers in Madison Square Garden last month.

"It was real special, to play my first (NHL) game this young was a lot of fun, especially in Madison Square Garden," Stone told wheatkings.com. "My goal for the summer is to go in and make Ottawa, getting a little taste (of the NHL) makes me want it that much more."

Stone racked up 296 points in 232 career WHL games over four seasons with the Wheat Kings. He is the first Wheat King to win the award since Cory Cyrenne in 1998.
