UPDATE: Wheat Kings make third deadline deal
The Brandon Wheat Kings pulled off a trio of trades prior to Thursday's Western Hockey League trade deadline.
One major deal sent leading scorer Alessio Bertaggia to the Spokane Chiefs, while another shipped 20-year-old left winger Michael Ferland to the Saskatoon Blades for their first-round pick in the 2013 WHL Bantam draft.
In return for the Bertaggia, a Swiss winger, the Wheat Kings receive third- and fifth-round picks in this year's WHL Bantam Draft, Czech forward Marek Kalus, 19, and the rights to forward Rhett Gardner, 16.
After totalling 42 points for the Chiefs last season, Kalus has played only 11 games this season, picking up four assists. Gardner is playing Midget AAA Hockey in Saskatchewan for the Moose Jaw Generals, tallying 15 goals and 31 points in 20 games.
Earlier, the Wheat Kings sent defenceman Ayrton Nikkel to the Everett Silvertips.
In exchange for Nikkel, 17, and a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2015 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft, the Wheat Kings received defenceman Nick Walters, 18, and the rights to forward Taylor Sanheim, 16, of Elkhorn.
A fourth-round National Hockey League draft pick of the St. Louis, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound Walters has one goal, 10 points and 70 penalty minutes in 35 games this season, with a plus/minus rating of -19. Sanheim is fifth in Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League scoring, with 22 goals and 45 points in 32 games this season for the Yellowhead Chiefs.
